Leibniz online. A Modern Presentation of Unknown Manuscripts
Hartmut Hecht (Berlin, Germany)
hecht@bbaw.de
The focal point of series VIII of the Leibniz academy edition is its Internet presentation. Some guidelines are characteristic for it. The user has (1) the possibility to compare the transcription of a text with its original manuscript. He (2) can generate the text step by step only by mouse click, and he (3) can use special functions of the presentation programme, which demonstrate the development of drawings as well as the unique structure of some of them by the help of simple animations. Finally the user gets (4) the possibility to consult linked references, and he can (5) search for manuscripts, which are neither available in prints nor in the World Wide Web.
The functioning of our Internet presentation will be demonstrated by the help of some examples. Simultaneously it will be shown that this kind of presentation of historical sources is not only a modern kind of edition but also an effective means for analyzing texts.

Leibniz in Paris
Vladimir KIRSANOV (Moscow, Russia)
kirs@gol.ru
In spite of the fact that the Parisian period of Leibniz's life is well studied, a detailed information of his achievements in physics and mechanics is still limited. In the process of preparing Leibniz's manuscripts of this period to publication it became possible to broaden our knowledge of the evolution of his scientific education as well as of his first attempts to be occupied with the problems of physics and mechanics. The present paper discusses the scope of his reading and learning and some of the most interesting ideas and results in physical sciences (motion in the resisting medium, elasticity, friction, perpetuum mobile, etc.)

Series VIII of the Leibniz-Edition. An Introduction
Eberhard KNOBLOCH (Berlin, Germany)
eberhard.knobloch@tu-berlin.de
The eighth series of the Academy edition of Leibniz's complete works and letters will consist of eight printed volumes and comprehend Leibniz's studies regarding natural sciences, medicine, technology. Only a very few of these 3500 manuscript pages are known up to now. An European international working group of French (Paris), Russian (Moscow), and German (Berlin) historians of science are preparing an internet-presentation and a printed version as well. The about 3500 scanned original manuscript pages are already freely available in the internet and that in three sizes.

Leibniz's Early Papers on Medical Care
Achim TRUNK (Berlin-Köln, Germany)
trunk@bbaw.de
Leibniz took a great interest in questions of medical research and care. He was familiar with the relevant literature, and in his early papers he even developed own far-reaching research programmes. These papers - so far widely unknown - will be edited by the Leibniz Project. Some examples are presented at the symposium.
